I'd like to add some explanation about my use of the word "indicate" in the following sentence: "As I will explain in class, however, this is a very common way of indicating the length of something in English."
Here are the definitions you included in your post:

Both of these definitions are close to the meaning I intended. I think they are a little bit difficult to understand, though. I think that "indicate" as I used it is very close to "say" or "show". "He indicated that he was not happy about what happened" is very close in meaning to "He said he was not happy about what happened." The difference is that there are other ways to "indicate" besides saying "I'm not happy." For example, one can frown, or say something that shows displeasure indirectly.
